For our next installment of food and wine pairings I thought it would be a good idea to suggest some wines with cheese. In fact, if you have have an opportunity to attend a wine and cheese event, do so. They usually offer fantastic value for money and you will almost certainly taste cheese and wine that perhaps you wouldn't have the confidence or inclination to go for. Plus, a nice old school face to face social event too. In fact, if you are in Moseley, Birmingham, this coming Monday, we are hosting a cheese and wine night at the Prince Of Wales pub with Lewis of Moseley.

Anyway, I do digress, back to the task in hand. I love having friends round and finishing off the evening with a cheese board. Even better is when I am round at a friends for dinner and after I have gorged on three courses they then heave a giant cheeseboard over to the table and ask me to dig in. Usually as the clock strikes midnight. So, some tips to help you match flavours more effectively;

Blue Cheese is usually salty and deep in flavour so goes very well with a dessert wine. Gorgonzola and Roquefort work well with Sauternes. Click here to see a suggestion. Stilton famously goes down great with port. Click here for a delicious recommendation.

Harder, full flavoured cheese require fuller flavoured wines – This delightful French red (extraordinary berry flavour) tastes great with Parmigiano Reggiano. Hard flavourful cheeses also go well with a full bodied wine such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Montepulciano.

Soft Cheeses require wine with a good structure or otherwise they taste bland and loose together on the palate. Brie and Chevre work well with a medium chardonnay. You can't go wrong with this gold medal winner from Spain. If only red wine will do, Pinot Noir is a perfect partner. Try one of our own favourites, click here.

I also happened across a very useful tip re rosé wines. Apparently almost all cheeses pair well with a dry rosé. The reason being that rosé wine have the acidity of white wine and the fruit character of red wine. Isn't that handy? Check out our range of rosé.

So put this into practice sometime soon or look out for a local wine and cheese event. And if you are near to Moseley, Birmingham...
