Serendipity
According to my old friend Wiki, serendipity means a "happy accident" or "pleasant surprise"; a fortunate mistake. Specifically, the accident of finding something good or useful while not specifically searching for it.
Why am I sharing this with you? Well two wine related serendipitous events have collided into me in successive weekends.
The first was at my BBQ last weekend. A friend, Jim, who knows how we love visiting South Africa, kindly brought along a bottle of Rustenberg's John X Merriman. Why is this remarkable? Well, he had no idea that I had visited Rustenberg back in early 2011 for a tasting and was blown away by this particular wine. Nor did he know that I had a glass in a restaurant on my last night in Cape Town late last year and enjoyed it so much that when I returned I immediately spoke to Paul about sourcing some. Sadly, we weren't able to source the particular vintage though we did manage to bag a few magnums, that unsurprisingly have since sold out.
Then yesterday, during a hastiliy arranged visit to my partner's family in Cambridgeshire, a neighbour, Helen, dropped by a gift for my partner's Mother. A little thank you for sorting out her bins whilst she was on holiday in France. Everybody needs good neighbours don't you know. Guess what this gift was? No, not the Merriman. That would have knocked me out. It was a lovely looking bottle of Duc de Morny Picpoul de Pinet 2012. Helen had visited the winery whilst in France and brought a few bottles back with her. Yep, we stock this pretty hard to source lovely wine.
I mean, what are the odds you would be given on this latest occurrence? Last minute visit, neighbour knocking on the door during the visit, neighbour visiting the winery we source wine from, neighbour brings back a few bottles as she really liked it, neighbour brings a bottle over as a gift.....
I don't know what this means in the general scheme of things. Perhaps I need to drink these two wines more, perhaps I should buy a lucky dip lottery ticket. Perhaps Helen or Jim should. Perhaps we should form a syndicate.
I think I will start with the drinking option. Be rude not to.
